YESHIVA SHAAREI TORAH OF ROCKLAND
(Formerly Shaarei Torah Institute)

Organization Directory Page

Founded in 1977, Yeshiva Shaarei Torah of Rockland offers a rigorous, comprehensive program of Judaic and Talmudic studies. It stands as a proud heir to the respected institutions of classical Jewish learning dating back centuries before the birth of western universities and colleges, before the execution of Socrates, and before the Roman forum. It walks in the footsteps of the institutions of Biblical times, the Talmudical academies of Babylonia, the admired institutions of the Islamic world during the Middle Ages, and the major establishments of Talmudic scholarship in Italy, Spain, Germany, and France. Eventually, from these emerged Lithuanian-type institutions of relatively recent pre-World War II that arose in Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Austria-Hungary, and Western Europe. Today these great centers of Jewish scholarship are no more. In their stead, and to replace them, the American Jewish community has endeavored to fill the vacuum with a new Lithuanian-type, yet American, institution of higher learning. Thus, Yeshiva Shaarei Torah utilizes the methods of study and concepts of classical Jewish scholarship that have been refined through the ages, blending them with the American upbringing, background, and culture of today’s students.

Yeshiva Shaarei Torah is dedicated to promoting traditional Jewish scholarship by providing quality baccalaureate-level curricula in classical Talmudic and Jurisprudential studies and research, in a climate that encourages intellectual growth and self-improvement, under the auspices of a distinguished faculty of scholars. By maintaining a quality program in the Jewish humanities, Yeshiva Shaarei Torah educates qualified Judaic scholars and authorities prepared to address the needs of American and world Jewry. It ensures that its graduates, whatever their alternate professions, will have intensive and extensive knowledge, and a mature understanding, of Talmud, halacha, the fundamentals of Judaic thought and its application to daily life.

Yeshiva Shaarei Torah encourages its students to strive for academic excellence. To that end, a demanding program in Talmudic research and halacha (Judaic codes and Jurisprudence) is the core of the school’s curriculum. This intensive core is supplemented by studies in mussar (ethics), Jewish thought, responsa biblical literature, Prophets, and the Hagiographa. The Yeshiva is committed to developing scholars who both assimilate and master a body of Talmudic and halachic knowledge, who eventually engage in considerable independent creative research, using primary sources in their original languages, who grow as spiritual, moral, and ethical human beings sensitive to the needs and aspirations of their fellow men, who have the skills and vision necessary for inspiring leadership in voluntary community service, and who apply the knowledge and insights gained and studied to daily life and future professional and career aspirations. Therefore, along with the classical studies, the program offers preparation for future professional careers as educators, educational administrators, Judaic Jurisprudence experts, the various secular professions, such as medicine, law, accounting, engineering, pure scientific research, and as leaders in various positions of community service. Thus, the twin objectives of intensive intellectual study and career preparation, augmented by emphasis on personal, moral character development, and ethical community responsibility, combine to develop a graduate uniquely able to synthesize his theoretical studies with his daily life in today’s complex world; a graduate who will apply theoretical ethics to his professional behavior.
