St. Giles International was founded in London in 1955 as part of the St. Giles Group, which includes seven colleges in England, the United States, Brazil and Canada. St. Giles offers intensive language teaching for the teacher of adult learners leading to the Cambridge University CELTA - Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. The CELTA program is approved by Cambridge University in England, which sends an assessor to every course. This provides both clients and overseas employers with a guarantee of the quality of St. Giles's training.

St. Giles offers intensive Cambridge CELTA courses throughout the year. To ensure high standards of instruction, each course has a maximum student-teacher ratio of 5:1. The program offered by St. Giles includes a number of features which distinguish it from many other TEFL training programs, including: pre-course distance learning component, significant in-course coverage of cross-cultural and professional development issues, and personalized job placement assistance. It also provides its graduates with post-course teacher development materials and ongoing job guidance.

Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
(Formerly The RSA/Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults [CELTA])

Location: St. Giles International, 785 Market Street (Suite 300), San Francisco, CA.
Length: Approximately 120 hours (4 weeks full-time or 12 weeks part-time); in addition, 35 hours of pre-course reading assignments.
Dates: January 1997 - Present.*
Objectives: This course provides a basic introduction to language and language teaching for the teacher of adult learners. The course employs an intensive format that integrates lectures and workshops with opportunities to practice teaching skills in classrooms of adult learners of English as a foreign language and receive immediate detailed feedback from master teachers. Because the course is housed alongside a functioning English as a Second Language program, participants have access to teachers, materials and students that enhances their potential as English Language teachers. Upon successful completion of this course, the stu­dent will be able to do the following: prepare, plan, and teach English language teaching (ELT) lessons to adult learners in a variety of contexts; discuss key ELT concepts and methodology; evaluate a range of ELT materials for use in lessons and in lesson planning; apply ELT theory to practice in classroom teaching at different levels; behave professionally in a culturally appropriate manner; conduct an effective ELT job search.
Instruction: Language awareness; the learner, the teacher and the teaching/learning context; planning for effective teaching of adult learners of English; classroom management and teaching skills for teaching English to adults; resources and materials for teaching English to adults; professional development for teachers of English to adults.
Credit recommendation: In the graduate degree category, 6 semester hours as an elective in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (5/98) (5/03 revalidation) (6/08 revalidation).

Transcripts issued for completion of this course from January 1997 through February 1999 may indicate that the course was completed under English International, Inc.
