Sergeant’s School


Descriptions and credit recommendations

Sergeant’s School
Location:
New York State Department of Correctional Services Training Academy, 1134 New Scotland Road, Albany, NY.
Length: 80 hours (2 weeks).
Dates: August 2000 - April 2006.
Objectives: Discuss the role of the sergeant in correctional institutions with respect to institutional policies and procedures, legal principles and concepts, inmate programs and rights, supervising and motivating personnel, and dealing with personnel issues.
Instruction: Basics of supervision and counseling; sexual harassment prevention; inmate programs; inmate grievance programs; recognizing unauthorized inmate groups; security staffing; laws, codes, rules, regulations, and policies; leadership and communication; Inspector General's office; employee assistance program; hearings and appeals process; legal issues for sergeants; use of physical force; special operations; performance evaluation program; ministerial services; interpersonal communications for sergeants; aggravated harassment by inmates; interview and interrogation techniques; special housing discipline; reassignments and promotions.
Credit recommendation: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 2 semester hours as an elective in Criminal Justice (4/00) (7/2005). NOTE: 1 semester hour of this credit recommendation can be combined with the 2 semester hours recommended for Institutional Procedures under the Recruit Training Program to total 3 semester hours as Correctional Administration in Criminal Justice. Further, the remaining 1 semester hour of credit recommended for this course can be combined with Legal Principles and Concepts under the Recruit Training Program to total 3 semester hours as Correctional Law in Criminal Justice.
