Descriptions and credit recommendations

SUMMER PROGRAM (Level I)

Acting I (ACT112)
[Formerly Acting I (ACT110) and Acting I (ACT101)]

Location: The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, 39 West 19th Street, New York, NY.
Length: Version 1: 30 hours (3 weeks). Version 2:  27 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: June 2002 - August 2004. Version 2: September 2004 - Present.
Objectives: Version 1: Discuss, appreciate, and make applicable the basic ideas of acting to create believable characters. Version 2: Apply fundamentals of basic acting technique to create a foundation for more advanced work.
Instruction:
Version 1: Students engage in various exercises, such as A/B scenes; observation and object; and the use of one’s physical instrument in action. Version 2: This course introduces the ideas of Stanislavski and the foundation of acting through script analysis, monologues, exercises, and scenes.
Credit recommendation:
Version 1: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 2 semester hours in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (12/02). Version 2: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1semester hour in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (7/04 revalidation).

Actor’s Movement (DAN110)
[Formerly Movement I (DAN101)]

Location: The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, 39 West 19th Street, New York, NY.
Length: Version 1: 22.5 hours (3 weeks). Version 2: 18 hours (4 weeks). Version 3: 15 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: June 2002 - August 2004. Version 2: September 2004 - May 2005. Version 3: June 2005 - Present.
Objectives: Version 1, 2, or 3: Develop a particular brand of physical comedy using one’s individual personality.
Instruction: Version 1, 2, or 3: Students engage in exercises to refine the senses, strengthen concentration and improve the qualities of movement, rhythm, tempo, and breath.
Credit recommendation: Version 1, 2, or 3: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1 semester hour in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (12/02) (7/04 revalidation).

Commercial Basics  (COM110)
[Formerly Commercial Basics (COM101)]

Location: The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, 39 West 19th Street, New York, NY.
Length:  Version 1: 18 hours (3 weeks). Version 2: 18 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: June 2002 - August 2004. Version 2: September 2004 - Present.
Objectives: Version 1 or 2: Achieve awareness of one’s potential for a professional acting career.
Instruction: Version 1 or 2: Work on commercial copy through improvisation, on camera copy, discussion of student’s type, and how student will fit into the acting profession.
Credit recommendation: Version 1 or 2: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1 semester hour in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (12/02) (7/04 revalidation).

Film and TV Basics (FIL110)

[Formerly Film and TV Basics (FIL101)]
Location: The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, 39 West 19th Street, New York, NY.
Length: Version 1: 30 hours (3 weeks). Version 2:  27 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: June 2002 - August 2004. Version 2: September 2004 - Present.
Objectives: Version 1 or 2: Discuss basic film acting technique; lay a foundation for the audition process and for more advanced training in film and TV performance.
Instruction:  Version 1 or 2: Students engage in exercises in auditioning, breaking down a scene, and exploring basic acting technique.
Credit recommendation: Version 1: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 2 semester hours in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (12/02). Version 2: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1semester hour in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (7/04 revalidation).

Stage Combat (DAN112)
[Formerly Stage Combat (DAN103)]

Location: The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, 39 West 19th Street, New York, NY.
Length: Version 1: 22.5 hours (3 weeks). Version 2: 18 hours (4 weeks). Version 3: 15 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: June 2002 - August 2004. Version 2: September 2004 - May 2005 . Version 3: June 2005 - Present.
Objectives: Version 1, 2, or 3: Apply basic principles and safety factors to unarmed stage combat.
Instruction: Version 1, 2, or 3: Students engage in exercises to illustrate various concepts, such as body centering and grounding, slaps, punches, chokes, slaps, punches, kicks, and reactions.
Credit recommendation: Version 1, 2, or 3: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1 semester hour in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (12/02) (7/04 revalidation). NOTE: This course or its former version, (DAN103), and Stage Combat (DAN212) or its former version, (DAN211), are identical. Credit is recommended for the completion of only one course.

Improvisation I (IMP101)

[Formerly Summer Improvisation I (IMP110)]
Location: The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, 39 West 19th Street, New York, NY.
Length:  Version 1: 27 hours (6 weeks). Version 2: 18 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: June 2002 - August 2004. Version 2: September 2004 - Present.
Objectives: Version 1 or 2: Achieve spontaneity and freedom through improvisational techniques, using body, gestures, and emotion, for use in aspects of on-camera performance.
Instruction: Version 1 or 2: Students engage in group scenes, two-person exercises, and solo work, emphasizing spontaneity, listening, making and committing to choices, agreement, and working with others.
Credit recommendation: Version 1: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 2 semester hours in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (12/02). Version 2: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1semester hour in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (7/04 revalidation).

Voice I (SPE110)

[Formerly SPE101until August 2004)]
Location: The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, 39 West 19th Street, New York, NY.
Length:  Version 1: 45 hours (6 weeks). Version 2: 27 hours (4 weeks). Version 3: 25 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: June 2002 - August 2004. Version 2: September 2004 - May 2005. Version 3: June 2005 - Present.
Objectives: Version 1, 2, or 3: Work toward fully supported forward placed sound that is responsive and flexible; gain awareness of clear speech and articulation.
Instruction: Version 1, 2, or 3: Students engage in exercises in breathing and posture, breath and emotional connection, connection of breath to sound, articulation, resonance, applying good voice and articulation to demands of the text.
Credit recommendation: Version 1: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (12/02). Version 2 or 3: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1semester hour in Theatre, Drama, Communications, or Radio and Television (7/04 revalidation).
