The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts was founded in 1980 as Actors in Advertising, mainly teaching acting for commercials. By 1992, more than sixty percent of the course offerings were in film and television acting technique. The Conservatory was also known as The School for Film and Television until the change to its current name in 2007. The Conservatory now offers both a post-secondary Two-Year Conservatory program for film and television performance and a four-week summer program, which also accepts high-school juniors and seniors. Many courses are taught by those industry professionals who use these techniques every day: actors, directors, agents, casting directors, and producers.

The mission of the Conservatory is to integrate the acting foundations and methods necessary for the stage into the newer performance art forms: film and television. The Conservatory aims to train the artist in a systematic, process-oriented approach to acting in conjunction with understanding the technical and professional demands of these fast paced, goal-oriented, profitable venues. Most importantly, every student works in almost every session of every course, so they garner both an intellectual and practical understanding of acting technique and the industry.

The student body hails from across the U.S. and many countries overseas. Course work is available for the beginner, as well as the trained actor. Enrollment is based on previous education and experience, as well as individual goals and professional standards.

The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre and is approved by the U.S. Department of Education as a Title IV HEA Participant.
