Grading (LAN 421)

Location:
The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY; New York Institute of Technology (January 1993 - May 1998).
Length: Version 1: 16 hours (8 weeks). Version 2: 24 hours (8 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: April 1989 - May 1993.* Version 2: June 1993 - September 2004. Version 3: October 2004 - June 2008.
Objectives: Version 1 or 2: Interpret a contour plan; create contour plans; recognize problem areas as they relate to drainage and runoff; estimate the volume of runoff and cut and fill; describe the fundamentals of grading designed to control runoff. Version 3: Interpret a contour plan; create contour plans; recognize problem areas as they relate to drainage and runoff; describe the fundamentals of grading designed to control runoff.
Instruction: Version 1 or 2: Contour plan development; grading for sidewalks and roads; establishing grades for surface drainage; manipulating contours on cut and fill; computation of cut and fill; aesthetics and ecological concerns.
Credit recommendation: Version 1 or 2: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category or in the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 1 semester hour in Landscape Construction (6/83) (2/90 revalidation) (6/95 revalidation) (5/00 revalidation) (5/05 revalidation). *NOTE: An earlier version of this course, dating from January 1979 to March 1989, has been recommended for credit as part of a course grouping titled Basic Landscape Construction. Graphics I (LAN 311)
(Formerly Graphics I, Graphics, or Graphics for Landscape Design)
Location:
The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY; New York Institute of Technology (January 1993 - May 1998).
Length: Version 1: 21 hours (7 weeks). Version 2 or 3: 24 hours (8 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: September 1989 - December 1991.* Version 2: January 1992 - December 1994.
Version 3: January 1995 - June 2008.
Objectives: Version 1 or 2: Use drafting equipment and freehand drafting techniques to produce line drawings, simple orthographic views, paraline drawings, and simple renderings; develop lettering skills. Version 3: Use drafting equipment and freehand drafting techniques to produce line drawings, and simple renderings; develop lettering skills.
Instruction: Version 1 or 2: Line weight; scaling; basic abstraction of symbols; tone; texture of lines; lettering; orthographic projection; paraline drawing. Version 3: Line weight; scaling; basic abstraction of symbols; tone; texture of lines; lettering; plan views.

Graphics II (LAN 411)
(Formerly Graphics II, Advanced Graphics)

Location: The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY; New York Institute of Technology (January 1993 - May 1998).
Length: 24 hours (8 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: April 1991 - December 1994. Version 2: January 1995 - December 1999.
Version 3: January 2000 - June 2008.
Objectives: Version 1, 2 or 3: Construct plan, section/elevation, paraline, and perspective views of a project in black and white and color.
Instruction: Version 1: Introduction to one and two point perspective; introduction to color rendering; lettering and drafting skills; black and white rendering. Version 2: Introduction to one and two point perspective; introduction to color rendering; lettering and drafting skills; black and white rendering; orthographic projections. Version 3: Introduction to one point perspective; introduction to color rendering; lettering and drafting skills; black and white rendering; orthographic plan and section views; orthographic paraline drawings.
Credit recommendation: Version 1, 2 or 3: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1 semester hour in Graphics (2/90) (6/95 revalidation) (5/00 revalidation) (5/05 revalidation).

Length: 1. 24 hours (8 weeks). 2. 24 hours (8 weeks). 3. 24 hours (8 weeks).
Dates: May 2000 - June 2008.*
Objectives: Course 1: Follow a design process to solve a small scale design problem; apply basic design principles to a specific small scale site. Course 2: Apply design process and design development to a series of small scale site problems, using a variety of landscape elements. Conceptual design, progressing through schematic design phase and culminating in a preliminary design; graphic and verbal communication skills; landscape elements; definition of outdoor spaces; exploration and evaluation of design concepts. Course 3: Use plants appropriately to define spaces, taking into account design and seasonal characteristics, and site factors; prepare planting plans.
Instruction: Course 1: Introduction to design process, including on-site assessment, program analysis, functional requirements, conceptual design alternatives, and schematic design solutions. Course 2: Conceptual design, progressing through schematic design phase and culminating in a preliminary design; graphic and verbal communication skills; landscape elements; definition of outdoor spaces; exploration and evaluation of design concepts. Course 3: Basic design elements of planting, such as form, texture, color, sequence of bloom, and planting for specific climates, topography, and other natural situations.
Credit recommendation: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 3 semester hours in Landscape Design (5/00 revalidation) (5/05 revalidation). NOTE: Credit is recommended only upon satisfactory completion of all three courses. *NOTE: Earlier versions of these courses, dating from September 1989 to April 2000, have been recommended for credit separately. Please refer to the course exhibits below for further information.

Landscape Design History and Theory (LAN 301)
(Formerly Landscape Design History and Theory and Landscape Design Theory)
Location:
The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY; New York Institute of Technology (January 1993 - May 1998).
Length: Version 1 or 2: 16 hours (8 weeks). Version 3: 20 hours (10 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: September 1989 - January 1995.* Version 2: February 1995 - September 2001.
Version 3: October 2001 - June 2008.
Objectives: Version 1, 2 or 3: Identify and describe basic concepts of landscape design; explain attitudes toward the landscape as they have evolved through various cultures from antiquity to the present; apply concepts of landscape design and attitudes toward landscape to an analysis of contemporary gardens or landscapes.
Instruction: Version 1: Elements and structure of nature; concepts of space, place, orientation in the landscape; Greek and Roman attitudes toward landscape and beginnings of gardens and villas; medieval gardens; Italian villas, gardens, and grottoes; French gardens; English gardens; Eastern design traditions from China and Japan; American trends. Version 2 or 3: Roman gardens; medieval gardens; Italian Renaissance gardens; French gardens (16th and 17th Century); the French formal garden; the English 18th century garden; the 19th century British garden; Eastern design traditions from China and Japan; American historical traditions and contemporary trends.
Credit recommendation: Version 1: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 1 semester hour in Landscape Design (6/83) (2/90 revalidation). Site Detailing (LAN 422)
(Formerly Site Detailing, Construction II: Site Detailing; also formerly Landscape Construction II: Site Detailing)
Location:
The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY; New York Institute of Technology (January 1993 - May 1998).
Length: Version 1: 16 hours (8 weeks). Version 2: 24 hours (8 weeks).
Dates: Version 1: April 1989 - May 1993.* Version 2: June 1993 - June 2008.
Objectives: Version 1 or 2: Choose site construction methods appropriate for implementing design solutions for residential scale sites; draw site construction details appropriate for construction contract documents.
Instruction: Version 1: Construction drawings; graphic format; materials use in construction; circulation features, such as pavings, steps, and ramps; walls; fences; decks; legal issues. Version 2: Construction drawings; graphic format; materials used in construction; circulation features, such as pavings, steps, and ramps; walls; fences; decks.
