THE NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN

Organization Directory Page

The New York Botanical Garden was incorporated on April 28, 1891, for the purposes of establishing and maintaining a botanical garden, museum, and arboretum; the collection and culture of plants; the advancement of botanical science and original research; education in botany and horticulture; the exhibition of ornamental plants; and for recreational use. During its 100-plus year history the Garden has been a nationally and internationally recognized research center and resource of major importance to the plant sciences. The Herbarium contains a collection of over 7,000,000 dried specimens. The Garden publishes 10 scientific serials, operates the Institute of Economic Botany and the Institute of Systematic Botany, and offers a cooperative doctoral program in plant taxonomy. The Garden’s LuEsther T. Mertz Library holds more than 1,000,000 accessioned items and nearly a mile of archival records. Of the 1,000,000 items, there are approximately 500,000 volumes of books and journals (including nearly 13,000 serial titles and 230,000 book and monograph titles). The library is the largest botanical/horticultural library “under one roof” in the Western Hemisphere. It serves the Garden staff, students, professionals, and the general public in all aspects of plant studies. Living plant collections are maintained on the 250 acre grounds, in the Nolen Greenhouses for Living Collections, and in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. The aim of the Garden’s Education Department is to interest and instruct the general public in all aspects of plant life.

EDUCATION PROGRAM

Through the Education Program, the Garden offers 7 certificate programs and more than 900 classes each year. Certificate study is offered in botany, gardening, horticulture, landscape design, floral design, horticultural therapy, and botanical art and illustration. The Education Department also offers cooperative associate and baccalaureate degree programs.
