IVY LEAGUE DAY CAMP

Operated under the same family ownership since 1971, Ivy League maintains an excellent reputation as both a school and a day camp. Ivy League School, a nursery school, kindergarten and grade school (up to the sixth grade) is chartered by the State of New York; Ivy League Day Camp is a member of the American Camping Association, as well as the Long Island School and Day Camp Association. Ivy League Day Camp focuses on the individual camper’s needs in atmosphere of emotional relaxation, providing skill development in all areas of athletics and water sports, and extensive exposure to the creative arts. The Camp’s low staff-camper ratio makes it possible to provide daily opportunity for activity choice by individual campers. The goal of the Camp is to provide experiences that make lasting impressions and enrich young people’s lives.

Leadership Skills in Community Youth Recreation
Location:
Ivy League Day Camp, 211 Brooksite Drive, Smithtown, NY.
Length: Approximately 320 hours (8 weeks); includes 25 hours of initial classroom orientation, lectures, and workshops, and 6 one-hour seminars with group leaders.
Dates: June 1999 - September 2004.
Objectives: Create and organize age appropriate activities; practice active listening skills with campers, co-workers, and supervising staff; be able to identify the specific needs and abilities of children in groups; adjust strategy for instruction and supervision based on the needs of the members of the group.
Instruction: Participants in this program work as counselors in a summer recreation program under the direct supervision of professionally qualified staff. In addition to working with children on a daily basis, students meet weekly in groups with a facilitator from the recreation program’s professional staff to discuss assigned readings and their application to their experiences as counselors, they keep a daily learning log in which they analyze and evaluate their experiences, and they assume full responsibility for planning and leading a minimum of two activities. The learning experience emphasizes the following areas: proper supervision of campers; active listening skills; components of a well run activity; strategies in dealing with children; developing capable campers; identifying child abuse and neglect; disciplining with dignity; the functions of play; sports and young children; risk management.
Credit recommendation: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, or in the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 4 semester hours in Camp Counseling, Outdoor Recreation, Group Dynamics, or as an elective in Education, Physical Education, Recreation, or Educational Psychology, or as a general elective (3/99).
