EMBASSY CES

Organization Directory Page

Embassy CES was founded in 1980 as the Center for English Studies (CES) to teach English to speakers of other languages. From 1987 to 1999 it was affiliated with International House (a world-wide organization with over 100 affiliate schools in over 30 countries). In 1999 The Center for English Studies merged with Studygroup International and the school became Embassy CES.  Studygroup is one of the world's largest English Language teaching organizations, dealing with language teaching, university preparation, university placement and workplace internship programs in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.

Each year, students from all over the world study at Embassy CES.  At full capacity, the New York center is bustling with over 600 students. Courses are given in general English, business English and academic preparation.  Courses are also provided to prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Cambridge main suite examinations (FCE, CAE and CPE).

The University of Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) has been run at Embassy CES for over 10 years.  Eight full-time, four-week intensive programs are administered each year.  Each course has a maximum of twelve participants and is run according to strict University of Cambridge guidelines.

Descriptions and credit recommendations

The University of Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
(Formerly The RSA/Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults [CELTA]; formerly The RSA/Cambridge Certificate Course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Adults [CTEFLA])
Location: Embassy CES, 330 Seventh Avenue 6th Floor, New York, New York 10001.
Length: Minimum 120 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: January 1995 - December 2006.
Objectives:  Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following: describe characteristics of adult learners of English for speakers of other languages; describe major features of language, language learning and language teaching; display a practical working knowledge of the structure of English and of materials for learning and teaching English; develop effective lesson plans and sequences of lesson plans; manage classes effectively, including providing appropriate presentation, practice and production activities for adult learners; use teaching feedback and reflective activities as part of ongoing development as a teacher.
Instruction:
The course provides an initial introduction to English language teaching to adult non-native speakers.  The course employs and intensive format that integrates seminars and workshops with opportunities to practice teaching in specially organized classes with real language learners.  Participants then reflect on their performance and receive immediate detailed feedback from experienced teacher trainers. The course presents a modern, communicative approach to language instruction that emphasizes context and use while at the same time incorporating an analytical component appropriate for educated adult learners.  Topics covered include: class management and the role of the teacher; lesson and course planning; approaches and techniques for presentation and practice of new language; error and correction; approaches for developing the skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing; materials selection and evaluation; testing and public ESL examinations; analysis of English grammar from the learner’s perspective; analysis of English phonology from the learner’s perspective.
Credit recommendation: In the graduate degree category, 6 semester hours in Teaching English as a Second Language or Teaching English as a Foreign Language, distributed as follows: 3 semester hours (lecture) as an elective, and 3 semester hours as practicum credit (6/96) (6/01 revalidation) (6/06 revalidation).
