Descriptions and credit recommendations

Location:
Independent study program administered from the offices of the Credit Union League National Association; also administered in a classroom-based format at approved locations throughout the U.S.
Length: Modules 1-3: Independent study and/or classroom-based (approximately 32 hours).
Dates: October 1998 - Present.
Objectives: Modules 1-3: Explain the difference between leaders and managers; discuss the traits of exceptional leaders; identify the characteristics and functions of vision; discuss the advantages and disadvantages of different leadership styles; explain the use of conflict as a positive force; list the four parts of the change process; assume the role of mentor; define polarity; name the ten laws of leadership; explain basic planning theory (vision, mission, goals) and product life cycle; formulate a mission statement; develop plans and policies; write procedures and rules; describe project planning; evaluate and control plans; manage projects; state four management processes; identify levels of planning hierarchy and organizational design; explain four management styles; describe how change occurs in an organization; teach problem-solving process to employees; manage member communication; evaluate sales and service results.
Instruction: Modules 1-3: Developing exceptional leadership; art of leadership; role of the leader; leadership styles; motivating others; change management; ethical management; the importance of planning; myths about planning; creating vision; facilitating the visioning process with employees; vision and strategy; standing plans; operational planning; short-term planning; controlling plans; financial planning; human resource planning; the role of the executive in planning for the department; the organizational structure; communication within the department; organizing and managing for changing the problem-solving process; understanding the client; evaluating departmental employees.
Credit recommendation: Modules 1-3: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 2 semester hours as Leadership in a Business curriculum (4/98) (3/03 revalidation) (4/08 revalidation). NOTE: Modules 1-3 must all be completed to receive credit. *NOTE: The learning objectives and content covered in M09 Developing Exceptional Leadership and VL03 Developing Leadership, listed under the Volunteer Leadership Program, are identical; they may be used interchangeably for purposes of awarding credit. Similarly, M10 Strategic Thinking and Planning and VL04 Advanced Strategic Planning are nearly identical; they may be used interchangeably for purposes of awarding credit.
