The Child
Care Council of Westchester, Inc. is a private, non-profit
resource and referral organization dedicated to optimizing the quality
of life for children and working parents. The Council works with parents,
child care providers, employers, and community organizations to help promote
the availability of quality child care services in Westchester County.
Each year the Council's referral service helps thousands of parents by
providing them with child care referrals and information on evaluating
quality child care.
The Council promotes quality child care by offering training and support services
for potential or established child care providers, including: family child
care providers, child care centers and school-age care programs.
Through the Child Development Associate (CDA) curriculum, the Council improves
the professional status of child care providers by offering them a means
to learn developmentally appropriate standards and how theory applies to
practice.

Infant/Toddler Child Development Associate Training Program
(Introduction to the Early Childhood Profession)
Location: Various approved facilities throughout Westchester County.
Length: 120 hours (11 months).
Dates: March 2006 - Present.
Objectives: Identify practices to ensure a safe and healthy environment for infants and toddlers; design a learning environment that meets the developmental needs of infants and toddlers; develop appropriate activities that promote the physical and cognitive development of infant and toddlers; failitate communication with preschoolers which fosters language development; prepare learning opportunities for preschool children to exercise creativity through the arts; use methods which foster self esteem, encourage positive social relationships and guide preschool children toward acceptable behaviors; communicate effectively with families; implement a system that ensures effective program planning, organization, and record keeping; research strategies to keep current with early childhood research, theories, and practice; design a plan for professional goals and continuing education.
Instruction: This course provides the instruction and assessment preparation for the Infant/Toddler Child Development Associate candidate. It meets the requirements for 120 hours of instruction. Areas of study include the 13 functional areas as required for the credential: safety, health, learning environment, physical development, cognitivie development, communication, creative, self, social, guidance, families, program management, and professionalism. Student assessments include: writing a professional autobiography, six CDA compentency goals statements, compiling a professional resource file, and preparing for the verification visit.
Credit recommendation: In the
lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 6 semester hours in
Early Childhood Education, Infant/Toddler Education or related disciplines,
as an elective in Social Science, or as Child Development Associate 1 (3
semester hours) and Child Development Associate 2 (3 semester hours) (10/07). NOTE: This
course overlaps the Preschool version. Credit should only be awarded once.
Preschool Child Development Associate Training
Program
