Advanced Talmud: Gittin I
Location:
Association for Hebraic Studies Institute, Suffern, NY, authorized instructional sites, or approved proctor sites.
Length: Classroom-based or distance learning course administered through the Association for Hebraic Studies Institute.
Dates: January 2005 - Present.
Objectives:
Discuss the legal material addressed in the fourth chapter of Tractate Gittin; decipher the Talmudic text and show an advanced understanding of the Talmudic dialogue; discuss the dynamics of Talmudic argumentation and the precise literary elements of the Talmud and commentaries; read and analyze selected classical commentaries; discuss, compare and contrast the variety of opinions and approaches of the commentaries.
Instruction:
An advanced study of the fourth chapter of Tractate Gittin with the commentary of Rashi, Tosafot and selections from other commentaries. Emphasis is placed on: developing the ability to approach the texts independently; conceptualizing abstract Talmudic concepts; advanced comprehension of the Talmudic text in light of selected commentaries; developing techniques to approach and decipher the commentaries; comparing, contrasting and restating Talmudic discussion based on the various commentaries; and applying analytical skills to the principles of Talmudic law, thought and philosophy found in the texts.  Topics covered include: Recalling a messenger of a writ of divorce; using the court to annul the writ of divorce; collecting the Kethuba; witnesses on the writ of divorce; freeing slaves; ways to freedom; half slave half freeman; selling slaves; freeing captives; divorcing for various reasons and the consequences thereof, including divorcing for evil repute, vows or inability to bear children; and remarrying after a divorce.
Credit recommendation: In the upper division baccalaureate degree category, 6 semester hours in Judaic Studies, Jurisprudence, Near Eastern Studies, or Religion (5/05). NOTE: This course is not offered with the proficiency examination option.


Talmud: Bava Kama I
Location:
Association for Hebraic Studies Institute, Suffern, NY, authorized instructional sites, or approved proctor sites.
Length: Classroom-based or distance learning course administered through the Association for Hebraic Studies Institute.
Dates: January 2005 - Present.
Objectives: Discuss the general legal material of the first chapter of Tractate Bava Kama; discuss the dynamics of Talmudic argumentation and the precise literary elements of the Talmud; discuss the approach and opinions of the commentary of Rashi.
Instruction:
An introductory study of the first chapter of Tractate Bava Kama, with the accompanying commentaries, in the original Aramaic and Hebrew. Emphasis is placed on a correct reading and comprehension of the Talmudic text with selected commentaries; decoding the text; building a vocabulary of Talmudic terms and idioms; developing techniques to approach and decipher the text; restating and summarizing Talmudic discussion in one’s own words; reading and examining the Talmudic dialogue; and analyzing the principles of Talmudic law found in the texts. Topics covered include:  Major categories of damages; sub categories of damages; Tam and Muad; unrecognizable damages; damaging sacred properties; compensatory damages; punitive damages; liabilities of minors; the physically impaired or the mentally challenged; and the liability of partners.
Credit recommendation: In the lower division baccalaureate/associate degree category, 6 semester hours in Judaic Studies, Jurisprudence, Near Eastern Studies, or Religion  (5/05). NOTE: This course is not offered with the proficiency examination option.
