Bridge International Diploma in English Language Teaching (IDELT™)
Location: Bridge-Linguatec, Inc., Denver, Colorado.
Length: 140 hours (4 weeks).
Dates: July 2003 - Present.
Objectives: Teach English to adult learners using an appropriate range of practical skills; plan, prepare and execute a range of lesson types for a communicative, student-centered class using a variety of materials and techniques; assess learner needs in order to plan and teach lessons which take account of learners' backgrounds, learning preferences and current needs; develop learners' overall language competency by defining and analyzing language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and how they are learned; analyze and categorize the English language as well as design appropriate presentation, practice and production activities for lesson planning; demonstrate professional awareness and responsibility and teacher development by giving and receiving teaching feedback, as well as working effectively with peers and trainers.
Instruction: This learning experience provides trainees with the fundamental principles and knowledge of the English language and language learning as well as current teaching techniques for adult English language learners. The course is an intensive and integrated learning experience, involving a classroom and practicum component, the latter under the mentorship of course trainers. The Bridge IDELT™ is housed on the campus of our BridgeEnglish program which provides access to additional resources, professional teachers, and culturally diverse ESL students enhancing the overall learning experience. Instruction is through input sessions (interactive lectures and workshops), guided lesson planning, teaching practice and peer observation. Topics covered include: classroom management and teaching skills for teaching English to adults; the roles of the teacher and learner including the teaching/learning context; using and adapting resources and materials for teaching English to adults; assessing and addressing student needs; English language awareness (grammar); effective and efficient planning and presenting materials to learners of English as a Foreign Language in the areas of: conversation, listening, structure, function, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, and writing using The Communicative Approach as the foundation for all activities in the class; using multi-media in the classroom including e-learning resources for students; the history of the English language; cultural issues for the EFL teacher; and professional development for teachers of English to adults. NOTE: To receive the diploma as well as the credit recommendation, trainees must successfully pass all grading components, including submission of a final portfolio: participation in input (interactive lectures), observation feedback, lesson planning, teaching practice, and written assignments.
Credit recommendation: In the graduate degree category, 6 semester hours as an elective or as a teaching practicum in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (11/08).

Bridge International Diploma in English Language Teaching - Blended Learning (IDELT™-BL)
Location: Bridge-Linguatec, Inc., Denver, Colorado.
Length: 140 hours (4 weeks); first two weeks are online and second two weeks are on-site.
Dates: January 2004 - Present.
Objectives: Teach English to adult learners using an appropriate range of practical skills; plan, prepare and execute a range of lesson types for a communicative, student-centered class using a variety of materials and techniques; assess learner needs in order to plan and teach lessons which take account of learners' backgrounds, learning preferences and current needs; develop learners' overall language competency by defining and analyzing language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and how they are learned; analyze and categorize the English language as well as design appropriate presentation, practice and production activities for lesson planning; demonstrate professional awareness and responsibility and teacher development by giving and receiving teaching feedback, as well as working effectively with peers and trainers.
Instruction: The Bridge IDELT™-BL combines the BridgeTEFL Online Diploma with two weeks of the Bridge IDELT™ onsite course. This course is designed to meet the needs of candidates who cannot take the four-week onsite course. For the online learning experience, instruction is (done) through twelve learning modules plus one ESP (English for Specific Purposes) endorsement each of which contains a varying number of subtopics. Each module contains text, including mini-quizzes, and is followed by an objective test and two required written responses. A tutor is assigned to each course user. This tutor corresponds with the student, clarifying concepts as needed and responding to submitted written materials. Video demonstrations of selected topics provide further audiovisual instruction. Additional course materials include information on employment searches, a glossary, and a resource center. For the onsite learning experience, instruction is through input sessions, guided lesson planning, teaching practice and peer observation. Topics covered include: classroom management and teaching skills for teaching English to adults; the roles of the teacher and learner including the teaching/learning context; using and adapting resources and materials for teaching English to adults; assessing and addressing student needs; English language awareness (grammar); effective planning and presenting materials to learners of English as a Foreign Language in the areas of: conversation, listening, structure, function, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading, and writing using The Communicative Approach as the foundation for all activities in the class; using multi-media in the classroom including e-learning resources for students; the history of the English language; cultural issues for the EFL teacher; professional development for teachers of English to adults. NOTE: To receive the diploma as well as the credit recommendation, trainees must successfully pass the online learning experience and all onsite grading components, including submission of a final portfolio: participation in input (interactive lectures), observation feedback, lesson planning, teaching practice, and written assignments. For the online learning experience, students will demonstrate comprehension and application of the principles of teaching English as a foreign language through meaningful essays, lesson plans, other written responses to course materials, and objective testing of course concepts. The final grade is the grade given for the onsite learning experience.
Credit recommendation: In the graduate degree category, 3 semester hours as an elective or as a teaching practicum in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (11/08).
